Humbling…

Seriously, how much insane talent is out there?  People working things first just because it’s what they *have* to do, that they love to do.

Then they push the edges of what they can do and in doing so push the edges of what can be done and then, once proven they sometimes luck out and it becomes a living…

Congrats guys

Eins, Zwei, Drei… Whatever Mix

Whatever...

I’ve been buying up a lot of dance tracks from all over the place, realized that I started to have a pile of them that were a bit more on the aggressive side than my usual House mixes (and certainly more so than the Reggae series I’ve been working on).

And one night I was in just the right mood to pull them together for this mix.

So if you need to flush out a bad day, wake up and shake up or just looking for some kick ass Electro, Tech House and Techno, here you go…

Streetparade 2010: The Helmhaus Mix

Streetparade 2010: The Helmhaus Mix

Every summer the normally quiet and staid streets of Zurich swell with close to a million people from here, there and everywhere to be a part of Streetparade, a day (and night, and early morning) long celebration of  Trance, House and Techno – and sunshine, and a whole lot of people who are just in a good mood, a time to be a little less “Swiss” and more out there than most any time of the year.

I’ve been fortunate enough to be here for a few of them, and no matter what, it is always an interesting experience – twenty some odd massive tractor trailers turned into mobile clubs/dance floors, DJs working in stages set throughout the city center means amazing music no matter where  you are.  And add in a lot of people – did I mention close to a million? – and everyone is there, from freaks to families, all there to just let loose a bit, and have a good time.

I was there this year and put together this bare bones trance mix featuring Paul Kalkbrenner.  I have to admit that I didn’t know about him before he headlined here, but his minimal style works for me, maybe for you as well.  Enjoy…

This one is for Joan…

Just in case all that tie dye wearing, Grassroots dancing, granola munching, Birkenstock walking, gorge walking, coop bulk food buying life in Ithaca has her forgetting that she still has plenty of groove left from back in the day….

Happy Birthday!

The Subway Surfer

Subway Surfing
Subway Surfer

The weekend is coming, I have been cranking on a new deal that will likely pull me back in to the challenging and rewarding beast that is business.

So for the weekend, and to get psyched, I thought I would step back in time once again for some classic club tracks.

This one starts with the music that had on my Walkman (you know, the real tape kind, pre-iPod time) when I used to spend countless hours on the “RR” subway line in NYC.

That long underground commute was the main way I traveled from the weird brownstone I rented in Sunset Park in Brooklyn with a revolving cast of characters (girlfriend, friends and freaks alike) to the recording studio I started in by making coffee and left five years later having checked “Recording Engineer” off my life list.

From there, this one finishes with some of the big house/club tracks that I played years later while living in Ithaca, NY where, among a few other adventures, I crossed “Club DJ” off the list.

So as I work on setting up the next thing on my list it’s time to step back and dig back for some big beats from the past.  Enjoy…

Bollywood Beats

Punjabi MC
Panjabi MC

Bollywood Beats is one of the more eclectic compilations that I’ve put together.  The first track by Panjabi MC was everywhere a back a few years ago while I was in Davos on a short ski trip – and the weird “Bollywood” style video they put together to promote it was truly bizzare.

Then again, so was watching “Superstar”, the German version of American Idol while I was there. I couldn’t understand a word they were saying, which somehow made possible to deal with the weirdness of it all.  Instead of hearing the inane banter between songs, you just have to see and feel whatever kind of emotion they are trying to convey – much more interesting…

Anyway, Bollywood Beats is not for everyone, but if you are interested in what comes from a cultural mashup of hip hop, bhangra, trance, lounge, club music and more, this will work.

Züri New Years Eve

Uetikon New Years
Uetikon View

This past New Years Eve I found myself living in Switzerland, in a small village outside of Zurich.  Needless to say, there’s not all that much going on as far as night life in such a quiet place, and all my friends there were either home with the kids, working or just plain asleep as midnight approached.

Since I didn’t have much else to do I decided to rummage through the collection and I put together mix of old club tracks from back in the day when I was a DJ.  Classic club tracks, some house and best of all, another chance to hear Haddaway’s “What is Love?” where it belongs, long before it was a head snapping joke.

As it turned out, the village holds a New Years Eve gathering/celebration in the village square, which was right in front of my apartment. So when I finished the mix, I went into the kitchen only to see a hundred or so people putting together a party right outside my house.  A few minutes later my friend Stefan arrived from a late shift across the lake and we headed down for a toast with the rest of the village.

Not bad for a guy with no plans for New Years…

So if you’d like to step into a club from ten years or so ago, this mix will do the trick.
