Blackout Party

Cool, cool, cool… The first full album recorded at The Lost Ark Studio is off for pressing, with a release party at The Casbah in San Diego set for Friday, October 21st.

Brian, Tim, Daniel, Jeff and Jesse are not only great musicians, but good guys, as is Mike, the man behind the console for all of it.

Opening the doors to the place was great experience – a private show every night – and the music, the CD, sounds great as well.  It might have taken me 25 years to work out how to get back involved with music, but if this is what can come from that long wait, it’s fine by me…

And go figure – a dub/reggae/house/trance guy loving this americana/blues/kick ass music, it’s been playing in my car for weeks now.

There’s more to follow, but for a listen of the first single off the album, check out the Soundcloud link below.

Un-Freaking-Real…

I am way late to the Dubstep party, truth is I probably won’t ever get there – but damn, it is downright inspiring to see one person redefine what is possible when it comes to dance/movement.  Just one dude, a camera and a hell of a lot of work – and your mind is blown…

The Lost Ark Studio

The Lost Ark Studio

Music has had a hold on me forever – hunched over a simple cassette player listening to Beatles tapes, getting my first Led Zeppelin album from an older cousin, listening to “Rastaman Vibration” for the first time, walking into a recording studio in New York City to make coffee and sweep floors and leaving with a bit of engineering knowledge and having a brief but ever so rewarding time as a DJ, spinning House music to those that needed it as much as I did.

After a ten year detour working with software (and enough sense to know that I didn’t belong on either side of the glass)  I had a chance to get back into music in far different way than before – by building a small recording studio with the help of a Scott Kennerly,

It took a couple of years of talking about it to finally pull the trigger, but I’m glad we built it as it is a pretty special place.  Location wise, it is where we first had a game room for the software company built down by the beach, and it’s just a hundred yards from the Pacific Ocean.  And even though we set out to build a very simple place, it turned out just right – big enough to record most any band live, comfortable enough to be in for 12 hours at a time, and with just the right amount of gear to get whatever is needed down on tape just the way it should be.

So yeah, I’m kind of proud of The Lost Ark Studio, and looking forward to seeing what comes of this new adventure…

Life Could Be a Dream

The Rivingtons

I was in the mood for some Doo-Wop music, and pulled this compilation together.

Came in handy on a road trip up the California coast a few months back – and any time a little nudge in the good mood direction is needed.

Great music from another era…

Cool…

Pretty amazing guitar playing, and love the rhythm – just not possible to feel down when you hear this. (Although the guy in the background seems to have heard it a few times… ;)

Peppermint Lounge Mix

Along with the usual house and reggae compilations I’ve been working on, every now and then it’s time to dig way back and listen to some killer rock and roll.

This compilation is a bit special in that it’s, to me at least, a walk through early “proto-punk”, tracks that stepped a bit outside the norm of the time, a rougher sound, pure energy.

And I’ve added in a few edits of mine that I’ve been fooling around with, taking some of the tracks and stretching them out a bit, opening the groove a bit more.  Nothing all that complicated, but fun to work on and I like the direction they took.

Enjoy…

R.L. Burnside: See My Jumper Hanging On the Line

Just bumped into this…  What a great groove, and unique picking style.  One guy, guitar, amp…  Alan Lomax did us all a great favor when he went out to find, record and preserve these amazing moments, these great musicians.

Scot’s Trans Am Jam

Trans Am Jam

I have no idea why, but I was in a mood for some Southern Rock the other day, so I thought I would put together a compilation for just such an occasion – and just in case Scot needed something to take him back to the dusty roads of Georgia, where he no doubt used to run moonshine, sit on the levee, eat fried green tomatoes and did all those other southern stereotype things I know he didn’t do (maybe the tomato part though – I hear they’re good…).
